Goals / Objectives
The general objective of this investigation is to supplement the current regulatory detection quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) with a tool which allows growers and regulatory agencies to detect Huanglongbing (HLB) infection earlier than they are currently able. Results of the study will help to inform regulatory decisions regarding the implementation of early detection technology methods to allow for earlier intervention for HLB infected trees and to achieve a subsequent reduction in transmission among trees during sample processing.
Methods (unparsed)

1. For the Florida experiment samples will be collected from each tree at baseline time point, and then at two week intervals for up to two-years. In California, suspect trees will be tested by Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) and negative trees will be caged. A baseline sample will be collected from each caged tree and the trees will be re-sampled monthly for up to two years. Samples will be processed using each of the four Early Detection Technologies (EDTs). Results will be monitored over time and data will be analyzed to identify EDTs which result in positive infection diagnosis prior to a positive infection diagnosis is determined by regulatory qPCR. 2. Modeling: The Webidemics simulation model previously parameterized with data from a Florida Huanglongbing (HLB) epidemic will be used to predict the long-term cost of using different EDTs on HLB epidemics based on the time to detection values we estimate in the proposed experiments.
