Goals / Objectives
  1. To conduct further research on variants of Liberibacters from citrus and citrus relatives that we have identified from the surveys and to develop rapid methods for detection of these variant populations
  2. To study the biology of the variants under greenhouse conditions, determine the changes in Liberibacter populations within individual trees over time.

Establish Liberibacter isolates of interest on lemon as source material. Graft transmit to range of standards cultivars in the greenhouse. Characterize symptom development to determine isolate x host genotype interactions. With limited number of isolates, assess potential for cross-protection from standard huanglongbing-causing strains.

This project is related to Objective 1: Create new genetic combinations of citrus, Objective 2: Screen germplasm for important traits and select superior individuals, Sub objective 1 D: Create new scions and rootstocks with potential resistance to HLB and CBC by genetic transformation. Seventeen diverse citrus relatives in South Florida were identified as having apparent huanglongbing symptoms. Budwood from each was used to bud- inoculate rough lemon rootstock liners in the greenhouse.
