Goals / Objectives
A few short cycle banana varieties have been identified which will be assessed for suitability in providing dooryard crops in the Treasure Coast area of Florida.
Methods (unparsed)

Cooperator will arrange for propagation of identified banana varieties and will provide plants for establishment at USHRL. Curator of the Miami Repository, will be involved in the project and provide expert guidance. Banana varieties will be planted at USHRL in a randomized complete block design. Two sets of the most rapid cycling variety will be dug up each year and overwintered in protected site, one will be replanted at 1 pup per planting space and the other at 3 plants per space.

This project is related to Objective 1: Create new genetic combinations of citrus, Objective 2: Screen germplasm for important traits and select superior individuals, Sub objective 1 D: Create new scions and rootstocks with potential resistance to huanglongbing (HLB) and Citrus bacterial canker (CBC) by genetic transformation. The cooperator who arranged propagation of the trees was unable to get them all supplied at the same time. Many of the trees were very small when we had freezing temperatures and winter injury compromising the experiment and confounded cultivar differences by different dates of planting. In addition the bananas are just not growing well on our farm site. Therefore, this project is coming to an end.
