Goals / Objectives
ARS will perform cooperative research with the University of Florida to determine whether or not plants related to citrus can serve as hots for "Ca Liberibacter asiaticus", the pathogen associated with the huanglongbing (HLB).
Methods (unparsed)

Plants of the botanical family Rutaceae will be propagated in the greenhouse and inoculated by the HLB pathogen with the parasitic plant dodder. Plants will be retained and evaluated for symptoms of disease, and samples will be taken and assayed for the concentration of the pathogen. The HLB pathogens inoculated in Beltsville will be from foreign sources to complement work performed in parallel by the PI in Florida.

Research was carried out to determine the host range of Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus in various plant species in the same botanical family as sweet orange. This research identified several previously unreported hosts of Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus. These plants are available as ornamental plants in the commercial landscape business. At Beltsville we propagated host plant material and made inoculations by grafting. Our results will assist in the management of huanglongbing disease.
