Non-technical Summary
We seek an attractant for the asian citrus psyllid that can be formulated with ISCA's proprietary biodegradable matrix to provide an efficient attractant blend that is specific to ACP, creating a rain-fast product that sticks to foliage, protecting and releasing the active ingredient for more than two months in field situations. Applied mechanically, this formulation will be tested among field populations of ACP to achieve control of this insidious pest.
Goals / Objectives
The United States is the world's second-largest orange producer after Brazil. Together, the two countries account for over half of world production. US citrus production in 2006-07 was 10.3 million tons, with a packinghouse-door value of $2.95 billion. Diaphorina citri, the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), is the presumed vector of Huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening; a disease associated with the presence of the pathogen Candidatus Liberibacter spp. ACP was first established in the US in Florida, and with the recent invasion of California, it is now present in all major US citrus producing states. The HLB pathogen invariably follows the vector, with trees showing signs of the disease in approximately one to three years after infection. In Florida the first detection of HLB infected citrus trees in 2005 triggered a concerted effort to detect and remove infected trees, which has now become a monumental and controversial task. Last year more than 1 million HLB infected citrus trees were removed from FL groves. The basis of current control methods is the cover application of conventional insecticides to suppress ACP populations. Stakeholders believe that this strategy is not working. There is an urgent need to bring to the market new, more effective tools to manage ACP. We seek an attractant that can be used in conjunction with ISCA Technologies' tools and solutions: traps to allow growers to monitor ACP populations, and lures incorporated into controlled release formulations to control the pest in the field.
